Why do most social security numbers start with the number 4?

Mine doesnt - it's based on the state you were a resident in when you were born and given the ssn. you can do a search online for more info and you can see where the first numbers mean a person was a resident when they were born. mine starts with 1 and is associated with Pa.Why do most social security numbers start with the number 4?
They don't. The first 3 digits of your SSN indicate the state you were born in. Each state has beginning sets of numbers assigned to it. So if you feel like everyone you know mostly starts with the same numbers, it's probably because most people you know were born in your state or region.

See here: http://www.usrecordsearch.com/ssn.htmWhy do most social security numbers start with the number 4?
Mine doesn't, neither do my kids or my fiance. It depends on the state you were born in.
no one in my household's # starts with 4.
All the ones I know start with 5. 502 and 512.
Each state is assigned a series of numbers for ssans. Mine nor any of the people in the state where I obtained mine does NOT start with four but do all start with the same number. It could be that all of the others you looked at are from the same state.
Mine starts with a ';0';.
There is a pattern to the SSN. You can find more information here:
